Read and Feed

with Bev Juniper

Wednesday 7th April at 2pm

Streamed live on both Kirklees Libraries YouTube channel and Facebook page

Kirklees Libraries have worked extensively with Community Foodworker Bev Juniper to deliver various sessions for children and families. Some of our most popular sessions have been the Read and Feed actvities. These deliver guidance on how to practice safe kitchen skills while preparing simple dishes on a fun theme, combined with a related storytime. In one session, for example, Bev showed families with young children how to prepare a ‘rocket sandwich’ and an ‘alien pudding’ and this was followed by a reading of  ‘Aliens Love Underpants’ by Claire Freedman. The storytime is usually delivered by a Librarian and the children often enjoy eating the food they have prepared while they listen.

The Read and Feed sessions have previously been delivered as part of the Kirklees Healthy Holiday programme, contributing to the Council’s bid to combat ‘holiday hunger’ in the area.

Here, streamed live from her kitchen at home, Bev shows us how to make an easy and fun lunch consisting of a snack, a sandwich and a pudding. All the recipes can easily be made by young children – with just a little help from a grown up – and Bev gives advice on kitchen safety and utilising basic preparation techniques such as chopping and grating. The session also showcases some of the great books and audiobooks available to borrow from Kirklees Libraries to complement the themes used in the recipes.

You can watch the session on catch-up at the bottom of the page and find out how to make an owl rice cake, a rainbow wrap and an alien pudding. We’ve also highlighted the ingredients you’ll need  as well as links to Bev’s easy to follow instructions on how to make each dish. Enjoy!

’50 things to do before you’re five’ offers families in Kirklees with young children an exciting list of actvities to try which encourage learning at the same time as having fun. Activity number 47 on the list is COOKING, so by making one of the recipes from our Read and Feed session, you’ll also be able to tick one ‘thing’ off your list of exciting things to do.
