Kirklees Young People - Our Summer – A Being All I Can Be project

Objectives:

To provide each young person the opportunity to express themselves and be part of a Kirklees-wide evaluation of how young people are coping with coming out of lockdown and looking to the immediate future.

  • All participants contribute to a Kirklees-wide collaborative video.
  • The session will start with an open group discussion about their feelings about the upcoming summer, facilitated by a librarian. People need only engage with the group if they feel happy and confident to do so.
  • Based around the theme of “Our Summer” participants will start by writing down on Post-It notes (anonymously) single words that sum up their feelings about the summer holidays…be it relief and relaxation or worries and stress (these will form a word cloud picture in the video).
  • The group will be split into smaller groups and each will have a selection of poetry books to look at and choose a poem that appeals to them. As a full group again, participants are invited to share their chosen poem, if they would like to.
  • The participants then write a poem about how they are feeling now (acrostic/freestyle/haiku or whatever they fancy), or they can come up with a phrase to sum up their feelings and illustrate it/write it in bubble writing/graffiti style.
  • The young people are invited to have the librarian record their poem (just audio, no video) or phrase for inclusion in the video.
  • At the same time, as people finish their writing, they are encouraged to create a self-portrait where one side is their face and the other side shows their thoughts. These will be used as visuals for the video.
  • Back as a group for the summing up and participants can share their creations with the group if they like.
  • The video will ideally include a list of first names at the end but each piece of work would be anonymous.

The video will be created by the end of September and people will be able to find it via our website.
